Random… I blame the first week back at school

So as I begin to get more deeply involved in the “blogging world,” I realize several things:

1. I am a novice, baby, wannabe blogger… whew. Glad I got that out there, just in case you couldn't tell :-p
   
2. 2- In the interest of privacy and not letting creepers figure out my super secret location or life, I think I should give more of myself personally and not the more “revealing” details that could be traced by mean sneaky people. If that makes any sense.
   
3. I’m really not sure that #2 made any sense… sorry. I guess I’m trying to say that I want to let you in on my head, not my surroundings. There. Let’s go with that one.

Going off of that oh so special combination of 2 and 3, here is a list of random “let’s get to know Bek” stuff… and please, readers, I’d love to read your own “let’s get to know {you}!” Please comment, or write yours on your own blog. Let’s go community on the blog world! :)

Here goes my list:

• I crochet…. but right now I've only made things from one stitch. My good friend who works at a library has ordered some books for me, so I should be able to do more {THANK JESUS!} and I’ll keep you posted on that venture. In the meantime, I’m working on a birthday present for my friend’s daughter.
• Josh Garrels drifts in and out of my NUMBER ONE FAVORITE ARTIST spot…. he’s pretty much always in the top 5, but yeah… currently number one… told you this was random
• My water bottle is called my “wat bot” as in it rhymes as in it’s awesome. Be jealous. I refill my wat bot at least 5 times a day… I love water!
• Going with the naming theme…. because I prayed so much for my dorm to have air conditioning, when I moved in and found a lovely {ok really ugly but it was lovely to my sweat-covered eyes} air conditioner in my room, I was so thrilled that I named it. So Bob is my air conditioner, and Roberta is the hot pink fan that provides lovely {actually lovely this time} white noise at bed time. The fridge doesn't have a name. Neither does my phone. But if I had an iPhone, I would be tempted to name it like Jen did. :)
• My roomie and I are actually keeping a list of why God made us roomies… I think we have almost 20 things on there now…. it’s an ever-growing list; some of it is serious, some of it is very not, and I’m happy to have it. And to have her as a roomie. She was the one who first taught me how to crochet!
• Note that this list is NOT in order of importance; if it was, this would be number one- I LOVE Jesus. He is amazing. Jesus is becoming my best friend and boyfriend and soul mate, all at the same time. He’s THAT cool. One of my future posts will be about His recent conversations with me.
• Going off of that… I switch gears quickly, ish. So be prepared for one post about books to read, another about abortion, and another on the random thing I overheard in the cafeteria. I believe that God has made me a person of depth and breadth, so brace yourself for the heavy and the light, the deep and the shallow, because we will go there. Or I will, and if you choose to keep reading, you can come too.

That’s all I can think of, besides one little detail that might make you all jealous. I’m ending this post so that I can take a nap. That’s right. I’m going to take a nap. Peace out, readers.

Thoughts on Job

Some of my fellow bloggers have recently posted about their New Year’s Resolutions, many of which include reading more Scripture. One lady posted links to reading plans, and I have decided to read through the Bible in a year following the plan here. One of my favorite things is to get the reading for the day and then head over to biblegateway to hear the Scripture read aloud. It’s marvelous! You should try it if you haven’t already {yes, this is the same “nice man” who read to me and my roomie}.

Since this reading plan goes chronologically through the Bible, I’m now in the book of Job. As I listen to the nice man read Job and Company’s conversations, I am struck by two things: first, the importance we must place on finding and keeping godly friends, and second, the power our words have.

Job’s friends were there for him, yes, but not all of them were pointing him to keep his trust in the Lord. I was convicted to make sure that my closest friends, the ones to whom I would turn should calamity strike, are friends that speak life and would tell me “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the Name of the Lord.”

This leads me to the power of words. Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has the power of life and death. I want to be one who speaks life, and I want to be surrounded by others who speak life.

Starting the New Year off right!

It’s Monday, and I’m blogging for the week! See, at least I can keep a resolution into the second day of the year.

Yesterday my sisters and I went to church (I LOVE WORSHIPPING AT HOME!!!!) and I realized that the next Sunday morning service I will attend at my lovely home church will be AS A COLLEGE GRADUATE. Yes, yes indeed. I fly back to school on Saturday, and the next time I’m home, I’ll be a grad. Holy. Shnikes. Batman.

Since my birthday is later this month as in after school has started, my family celebrated my birthday today. We the fam went to my favorite local fish and chips place and ate in the outside shelter where the birds fly around you and there are heaters on the ceiling. It was delectable. Then we wandered down to the store that has all the tourist-y items and “made here” paraphernalia, and we had a good time. Then my grandparents came over for dessert (cheesecake from Sam’s = YUM-O!) and my grandma gave me two pins and two memories.

My grandma is awesome. She is a prayer warrior on so many fronts, and she is forever a student, and she is great at making sure that pieces from her history and my grandpa’s history are passed down to her granddaughters. So several years ago, she started writing down memories for my sisters and me. These memories are usually of when we came over to her house or when she took us somewhere, and they are just short little stories of “when you were a little girl" so that when we are not little girls anymore, we will remember all the funny things we did. We get one at each Christmas and birthday, and sometimes in between, and now they are beginning to be accompanied by a picture. I treasure these, even as I laugh at the cheesiness, and I know that when my grandma is gone, I’ll value these memories written in her hand.

School starts tomorrow for two of my sisters, and what are they doing? Reading. Of course. We are a reading family. Both these sisters have read the Hunger Games (see my last post for more info), and I think one sis is re-reading them while the other reads something from The Complete Works of Jane Austen. Yeah. That’s how cool my sisters are. I love them.

What Else Do You Do on Christmas Break???

So since it’s Christmas break, I’ve been reading. A lot. And crocheting a lot (my BFF’s scarf actually looks like a scarf! Pictures coming soon!) but more reading.

Completed books:
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (book 2 will be started today, book 3 done before I go back to school)
- Secrets, Unforgotten, and Echoes by Kristen Heizmann, one of my favorite authors

- The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Doyle… I’ve been reading this on my phone for quite some time, but I finished it last night

Started and yet to be completed:
- A Tale of Two Cities – it’s my Christmas break tradition, but I may have to postpone this one till summer
- Surprised by Oxford, recommended by my dear BFF who’s been there
- Clued In, a business book my dad recommended. My goal is to read approximately 20 pages every day (about a chapter) so that I can have it done before I leave

Books to hopefully read:
- Passion and Purity and another one by Elisabeth Elliot. I’m really excited about these, but since they are pretty standard library books, I may just have to read them over the course of my final semester.
Kind of random, but my dear BFF (I know, I've mentioned her like 5 times already. But she really is amazing, and I love her dearly, and I’m SO excited that I get to spend time with her this break.) is taking me to see “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” today. The cast is really strong, and it seems like it will be really mentally stimulating. The trailer I've been watching is here. I’ll post my thoughts on it soon. Hope your day is beautiful!

New Goals

Alright, readers, I must apologize. You have been sorely neglected this month (and this semester) and I’m sorry. So my goals for 2012 are as follows:

1. Blog at least once a week. I owe you that much, and it’s not like I can’t get off some social media site for 20 minutes and keep you posted.
2. Blog with pictures once a month. Come on. I follow all these amazing blogs who post multiple pictures per post, and I can at least do that once a month. I believe in myself! :)

That’s it! I know that 2 is a bit pathetic, and I know that I am a bit early, but hey, at least I’m blogging. Hope you had a merry Christmas!
