My Life is a Romantic Comedy...

The theme of this post:
This is also the theme of my life, but that is depressing and beside the point.

Example One of Bek's Rom Com: on Wednesday night, Samara and I went to a friend's college's portfolio showing. Actually, it was a called a "port-show-lio" which automatically means that we're in a rom-com, right? Renaming things to be cutesy and rhyming? Anyway, we were having a great time, appreciating students' amazing skills and hanging with a couple friends.
We decide for our last few minutes, we would go and watch a video one of the students created. We stand in the back and are commenting on the soundtrack {kind of a cross between Sleeping At Last and Josh Garrels, in case you were wondering} and then it hit me: we forgot to pay for parking. We had parked in a lot that said "$5 Parking" and we pulled in thinking that five bucks was not bad, and we got out of the car and walked straight into the building. Without paying. And now the $5 that we would have and should have paid could look more like $60 from a parking ticket.
Wide-eyed, I turned to Samara and panic-whispered, "We didn't pay for parking." Her eyes got as wide as mine and she asked, "Do you think we should leave now?" Still slightly stunned, I nodded, and we both turned and gave our farewells to our friends, and then we power-walked down the street to find....
no parking ticket! Praise be unto the Lord! And Nora Ephron, who is kind to her rom-com heroines.

Example Two of Bek's Rom-Com: Thursday was a second-day-hair day for me, so I got up and grabbed my hairbrush and dry shampoo, intending to hit the trouble spots and call it good. Except that I grabbed hair spray instead of dry shampoo. And I didn't notice until after I had sprayed quite a lot onto the crown of my head.
I figured that maybe dry shampoo would remove hair spray, so I switched bottles and sprayed again. And then I brushed my hair and braided it and spent the rest of the day hoping no one would look at the crown of my head. And while no one dropped down on one knee like Nora Ephron would have dictated, no one pointed and exclaimed, "What happened to your hair!?" so I'm calling the day a win.

Example Two reminds me of this:

And on this note, I bid you a happy Friday and wonderful weekend. Peace to the out!

A Real Live Grown-Up

We all that those things, I'm sure, that we told our younger selves "You'll be able to do this when you're older/more mature/an adult." And some of those things have happened {I trust}. For example, when I was younger, I told myself that I would one day be able to fix my hair into something not resembling an alien trying to be beamed back up into its mother-ship.  And some days I actually told the truth. Other days... well, Dahlia told me that I don't have used-Barbie-hair, so I feel like I've accomplished something in my life.

But really, there are some things that you can only do when you're an adult. Like drive a car or wear make-up without looking like a drag queen {ahem, Miranda!}.

Well, I've compiled a list of things that I should be able to accomplish as I approach a quarter-of-a-century years old, but no cigar for this old lady. Please laugh and groan along with me as I lament the possibility of ever growing up into a fully mature adult.
  1. Painting just fingernails...and not the surrounding finger. Or fingers. Sigh.
  2. Using scissors to cut a straight line. Straight lines are the bane of my existence. Also, as #2.1, paper cutters are also quite intimidating; they should be available to help with the problem of crooked lines, but this has not been my experience.
  3. Cooking. Are more words necessary? In case they are, here's a poem I wrote about the whole situation.
Well, fortunately I can only remember think of three tasks that I've not matured into yet. If you think of more, please don't remind me. Ignorance is bliss, you know. Just let me pretend I'm an adult. Pleaseandthankyou.

One of Those Days

Today is one of those days where...
  • the alarm is already set for as late as I can handle it, and still the snooze button manages to get hit.
  • the sky is gray and it's somewhat sad after several weeks of glorious warmth and sunshine
  • surprisingly the bad-hair-day isn't as bad as expected...in fact, today no one has asked what happened on top of my head. I'm taking this as a very positive sign

  • try as I might, nothing comes to mind for Funny Friday. Sorry, peeps. Another time.
  • the rest of the week is catching up with me and all the late nights are hanging out in the bags under my eyes. Samara said it best: "moving is like Finals Week for grown-ups!" This is how bad it is: today, I actually went to Mickey D's and ordered a coffee. Me. Bek. Drinking coffee. Oi.
  • the to-do list in my head has been running for so long and has changed so many times that my tired brain has given up and is simply concentrating on moving. The end. Just get moved, Bek. Like a boss.
And because I'm not at all worried about Samara and my cooking skills...

Trying 7 Quick Takes

Ok, friends, this is something that I see on a lot of {Catholic} blogs... is this a Catholic thing or an East Coast thing or an experienced blogger thing or what? 7 Quick Takes is when you post about 7 things that you're thinking or seeing or whatever. It seems like it was invented by someone on a Monday, when there are tons of thoughts but no cohesive flow. I would be friends with this person.

Anyway, I'm going to try it, but I may or may not make it to seven things... consider yourself warned.

  1. Today is one of those hair days where I feel awesome and fresh and wild....and the mirror says, "HA! Good one!"
Here I am, feeling like Hilary Duff as she rocks the windblown look...

                    source
...when in reality I look like a Barbie doll ten minutes after the toddler played with her...

                    source
    Yep. One of those days.
  2. There are some musical artists that you have to be in a certain mood to listen to, and then there are those gifted ones, the classic ones, that you can listen to anytime, all the time. Judge me {and guess my age} if you want, but I think dc Talk is one of the latter. Maybe I'm slightly biased because a) they were my first concert or b) they formed the year I was born {oops, there goes age!} or c) their albums helped me survive Dance Camp when I was 12 {darn, age again!}, but I think that dc Talk is a seriously talented group, and I always enjoy their music. There, I said it. Go ahead and judge.
  3. Ok, if you have not read my bestie's post about travelling, you need to. I'm proud and grateful to call Samara my long-time BFF, and you NEED to read her post, like, right now. Read it. Go. I've linked it like three times already.
  4. Thank you all for your sweet comments regarding my Nicaraguan adventure! I'm so glad that technology allows us to share these small pieces of travels and experiences. I should note, since a couple of you encouraged me that being with children is one of my strengths, that my struggle was not whether or not I was good at playing with the kids but if I was using that strength at an appropriate time. And my leaders encouraged me that I was, so I was totally free! Thank you for caring enough to say something, and thanks for encouraging me in this area! I'm feeling the love :)
  5. Speaking of Nicaragua, wanna see some progress??? I was thrilled when I saw this update. Here's the progression:
Beginning: look behind the movers of rocks :)

Update from last week!!!! Isn't that amazing!?!?!

  6. Because no post is complete until there is a reference to something that is British or Benedictine Benedict Cumberbatch...
    Yes. Just yes.

  7. Here is a recent decision I made... 6703. No, I'm not going to prison. No, it's not how many times I've watched "Return to Me." No, it's not the number of children I'm going to have. It's a color. I'm thinking Frolic-y thoughts...I'll fill you in tomorrow :)
What do you think of these 7 Quick Takes? Another round next Monday, or come up with something else?
